Digital Pedagogy in Design Education – Bringing the Dialogue to the Pedagogue.
The term ‘Digital’ and all that it encompasses has begun to have a pervasive influence in all aspects of design teaching, learning and practice. If the first ‘digital turn’ changed the ways of making, the second ‘digital turn’ (Carpo, 2017) is poised to change the ways of thinking itself. The challenge in essence is to the tenuously held attitudes and beliefs of traditional design pedagogy. How will this affect the conventional as we know it today? What becomes of the mentor-apprentice, or the intimately tacit, modes of explorative learning? How will the notion of first hand discovery and experience be reinterpreted given the ubiquitousness of information on demand? In the bridging of the spatio-temporal divide, what happens to the local, the immediate, and the familiar? To what extent does one surrender one’s very personal creative instinct to generative assistants? Could there be a model that resolves the conflict of individual vs mass delivery of design education without compromising on quality, while ensuring economic sustainability?(Srinivasan, 2020)
