“Complexity of the Quantum Land”

Friday, 12 April 2024 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Senate Room, RV University, Bengaluru

P. C. Deshmukh, RV Chair Professor, RV University and Convener and Mentor, Center for Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences & Technologies - A Joint Initiative of the IIT Tirupati and IISER Tirupati

A vector in a complex vector space with a well-defined mathematical structure represents the physical state of a system. The complexity can be understood in terms of the complex wave function (pun intended), which is the coordinate representation of the state vector. The wave function has a real part and an imaginary part. It is representable in terms of amplitude and phase. We shall discuss a few interesting properties of the phase, particularly the dynamical and geometrical phases. The importance of the geometrical phase will be highlighted concerning the perplexing, near-ghostly, Aharonov-Bohm effect in the electromagnetic and gravitational interaction.
