The idea of citizen science or 'public participation in scientific research' is not new, but its practice has boomed in the past two decades. How can meaningful research be done with public participation? What kinds of questions are amenable to this approach? What are the barriers and the opportunities? And how might all this prompt us to think slightly differently about the roles of the public/amateurs as opposed to scientists/professionals in the research endeavor? I will discuss these questions by drawing from 15 years of involvement with citizen science in India; and will attempt to sketch some ideas for the future.
