Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Kumar is an accomplished academician, researcher, technocrat, and military leader with over three and a half decades of illustrious experience spanning academia, research, and defence. He is currently serving as the Vice Chancellor of RV University, Bengaluru.
A graduate of BITS, Ranchi University, Dr. Kumar holds an M.Tech and PhD in Engineering both from IIT Delhi, along with an MBA and two postgraduate diplomas in Management. He has the unique distinction of earning a second PhD in Management from Jain (Deemed-to-be-University) and an MS in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Throughout his academic journey, he has consistently been a distinction holder and a batch topper in most of his courses.
Dr. Kumar has authored seven books, including the widely-referenced engineering titles Concepts and Applications of Microwave Engineering and Wave Propagation and Antenna Engineering, published by Prentice Hall of India. These books are extensively used in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and competitive exams across India. In addition, he has contributed numerous high-quality research papers to prestigious national and international journals.
His expertise spans diverse fields, including Electronics and Communication Engineering, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, Radar and Missile Technology, Research Methodology, Human Resource Management, and Marketing. Dr. Kumar has served in key positions at organisations such as the Indian Air Force (IAF), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the National Informatics Centre (NIC). He has been associated with esteemed research centres such as the Space Applications Centre (Ahmedabad), Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DEAL, Dehradun), Scientific Analysis Group (SAG, DRDO), and Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE, Bengaluru).
During his tenure in the IAF, he held several prestigious command roles, including Commanding Officer, Station Commander, and Air Officer Commanding. He has made significant contributions to areas such as Satellite Communication, Microwave Engineering, Electronic Warfare, Antenna Design, Renewable Energy, and Radar Engineering. As Project Director and Principal Advisor at DRDO, Dr. Kumar successfully led several multi-crore projects funded by organisations such as the World Bank, DST, ICSSR, ICAR, and Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC).
A prolific speaker, Dr. Kumar is frequently invited to deliver talks at national and international forums on technical and management topics. He has also served as a guest editor and columnist for leading publications such as The Hitavada and Dainik Bhaskar, and has appeared on Doordarshan and All India Radio to discuss contemporary issues. His leadership has fostered collaborations with start-ups, MSMEs, and institutions such as CII.
Dr. Kumar’s exceptional achievements have earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal, conferred by the former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, on Republic Day 2016. Other accolades include the Bihar Gaurav Samman by Shri Ram Nath Kovind (former President of India), the Bharat Vidya Shiromani Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. As Vice Chancellor of a university in Raipur, he received the No. 1 ranking award for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2018 from Shri Prakash Javadekar. His innovative work in drone technology earned him recognition from the former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Dr. Raman Singh, alongside youth icon Virender Sehwag.
An eminent academic leader, Dr. Kumar has served as Vice Chancellor of three reputed universities before assuming his current position at RV University. He continues to inspire through his commitment to excellence in education, research, and leadership.
