Worked with The Hindu for 20 years as Deputy Editor, heading the culture and education pages. Curated, commissioned and conceived the culture and education pages. Published over 1500 newspaper articles. Writing contributions to some leading periodicals, journals and websites in India, which include Book Review Literary Trust, Seminar, Aniketana of Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Indian Literature of Central Sahitya Academy, Hampi University Kannada Studies journal, e-stq, the theatre journal, Prithvi – the theatre journal published by the late veteran actor Shashi Kapoor, Out of Print, Dhouli, Desha Kaala, Sanchaya, Abhinava, Bhavana, Ninasam Matukate, Kendasampige and others.  Served as the Editor of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy literary journal, Aniketana. Edited ten books, some of which are Shakespeare in Kannada, Women’s Writing, Rural Consciousness in Kannada, Young Writing, Book of Interviews and others.

Kannada Theatre (1850-1950) In three Octaves -- The life and times of Gangubai Hangal, Hunt, Bangle, Chameleon -- A collection of U.R. Ananthamurthy's short stories which won the Sahitya Academy award for translation, Just a Few Pages, translation of the memoir of the early Kannada writer Saraswati Bai Rajwade by Vaidehi, Translation of Kaleye Kayaka as Art as Life, the autobiography of the doyen of Kannada company theatre Gubbi Veeranna, A source book of Kannada Theatre (1850-1950), co-authored with K.V. Akshara.


  • ‘Indian’ idea in Indian film music, hopes to understand the complex creative negotiations that took place in this form, after about two decades from its inception in 1931. In the process, the project hopes to probe and uncover the ‘foreign’ within this form that was uniquely native. Foreign is not necessarily musical ideas from outside the borders of India, but also in terms of one Indian genre of music embodying ideas of the other.
