The B.A. (Hons.) Dr. Piyush Roy is a distinguished journalist, film critic, and author with an extensive career in Indian media. He has served as the former Editor of the popular film magazine Stardust and the film-weekly StarWeek. His journalistic experience spans senior reporting roles at leading Indian dailies such as The Indian Express and Hindustan Times, as well as contributions to Society magazine. His writings have also been published in The Times of India Crest Edition, The Asian Age, Screen, and The New Indian Express, amassing over 1,000 published works in media and cinema studies.
Dr. Roy has been the voice behind three acclaimed film columns:
● ‘Sunday Talkies’ in Orissa Post (2011–2018)His work extends beyond journalism into authorship, with five books to his name, spanning fiction, poetry, and cinema studies. His non-fiction debut, Bollywood FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About the Greatest Film Story Never Told (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019), was complemented by his feature documentary, Pleasures Prejudice & Pride: An Indian Way of Filmmaking, which was showcased in a multi-city seminar tour across seven UK universities in 2019. His latest book, Appreciating Melodrama: Theory and Practice in Indian Cinema and Television (Bloomsbury, 2022), re-examines Indian cinema through the lens of indigenous aesthetic philosophies. His most recent documentary, The Monarch of the Blue Mountain (2024), delves into the universal appeal of Sri Jagannath culture.
Dr. Roy’s contributions to film criticism have been widely recognized. He received a Special Mention for Best Critic at the 60th Indian National Film Awards (2013) from President Pranab Mukherjee and was invited to Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh for the UK-India Year of Culture inauguration in 2017.
